Will hidden assets be uncovered during your divorce?

We All Need A Champion

You may have become suspicious when your spouse suddenly began sending and receiving text messages. You were certain there was no affair going on, but since the two of you were discussing divorce, the time seemed ripe for hiding assets. In an upcoming divorce action, you will have to divide your marital holdings, and those may be considerable.

Your spouse may have decided to sock away some funds that you would supposedly never miss, or transfer property you never even knew about. However, this wily person did not count on the options you have for discovery, including help from an experienced divorce attorney and a forensic accountant.

A forensic accountant has special skills

If you suspect your spouse of hiding or disguising property, engage the services of a forensic accountant, a professional who is skilled at evaluating financial reports, tracking down properties and placing proper valuations on many kinds of assets. While this kind of expert may be an independent business person, many of the large accounting firms also have forensic accountants on staff.

Texting and emails

Speaking of forensics, a computer forensics company may come in handy with those text messages that raise red flags in your mind. Your spouse would probably delete any thread that had to do with hiding assets, such as moving funds offshore. However, keep in mind that a computer forensics company may be able to retrieve those deleted messages, and they will be permissible in court. The same applies to emails, information on social media and details stored on your spouse's mobile phone.

Your attorney can pitch in

Hidden assets are common -- in fact, they eventually turn up in two out of three marriages, according to the National Endowment for Financial Education. Your lawyer may be able to assist in your search by working through the proper channels to obtain calling records and other information that will be pertinent to your case. When you engage an experienced divorce attorney, you will have someone on your side who can support you and help uncover any marital assets that may have gone astray.
