Alcohol. Drugs and Divorce.

We All Need A Champion

That really is the word for it.

Obviously nothing new about alcohol and drugs of some kind working into people's lives, including married persons, and causing "problems."

Problems that wind up causing a divorce -- or making things so difficult that the couple get VERY, VERY near divorce, maybe file a Complaint for Divorce, maybe dismiss it, maybe start it up again?

So what's the issue?

Is it old habits die slowly? Is it genetic propensity to have an "addictive" personality? Is it some other worry or insecurity or physical pain, that prompts "self-medication" in the form of taking or using something that provides a lift, a distraction, some relief from a problem or problems that otherwise chew into the fabric of the person and the marriage?

All of the above?

And then what do you do about LOVE? It is not unusual that persons get married, perhaps both in the grip of any drug or substance and they both know it, enjoy the social and personal feeling and find the practice is or becomes their marital "hobby"?

So when does this get to be too much? Does it take verbal abuse only? Does it take the police arriving? Does it take physical, so-called "domestic violence," to put this over the top and place the couple enjoyably in Court or in Divorce?

And can you DO SOMETHING about it? Counseling? See the preacher? Go to a doctor and get pills that make you sick if you drink? Sort of point the gun at your own head to persuade yourself that not only do you really need to stop but that if you don't, well, now it might be pretty bad, the effects of that pill?

Then, again, there is the time-honored way of truly facing the real facts by angry DENIAL; choosing to be an ostrich and go down under the sand surface and hide? Get mad, real mad, maybe real violent, if you are challenged. Throw things?

Really act like Mr. Hyde when everyone knows you as kind Dr. Jekyll?

Got to have a lot of sympathy for these problems. I see them ALL THE TIME. Doesn't matter if you're rich or poor, smart or not so smart, have tons of higher ed degrees or not. This stuff is there, the problems are there, the underlying causes are there, the solution seems to be there, sort of.

The police?

Call the divorce lawyer after going online and trying to find some lawyer that gives a tiny bit of an impression that they also might be "human" and could counsel with you?

We all know what this problem is like in our own lives - this problem is a problem and needs prayer, for sure, commitment and discipline, true also, and MAINLY really screams for someone to listen to you, get it, the whole deal, not blame-gaming, just listen, figure out the situation and TRY, TRY, TRY to find a strategy or strategies for managing going forward, for the sake of your spouse, your marriage, for your OWN sake, dear Lord, for sure the sake of the kids.

We do that here. Not because it's tons of fun but because it is real life and so very, very, very needed, that help.
